Jan 5
Welcome back! I hope that everyone had a restful and relaxing break.
Where should you be at this point? You should be finished (or nearly finished) Assignment 5: Action Scene. If not, you will need to spend some time working on this project outside of class.
Assignment 6: Independent "Special Effects" Filmmaking
It is time to test your knowledge of After Effects by taking on a tutorial all by yourself. It's true, now you must survive all of the frustrations of completing a tutorial on your own. This is the last, but possibly most important, project that we will work on in this course. It is a test to see if you can complete a tutorial on your own, something that you will have to do if you want to keep working with this fantastic software.
Here's what you need to do:
1. Search for a tutorial that you want to try. The more difficult, the better. I highly recommend checking out Video Copilots selection of tutorials. Stick to the ones that do not require plugins.
2. Check to see if the tutorial is "Assignment 6-worthy". That means that you need to run the tutorial by me before you begin.
3. Complete the tutorial. Yes, it will be frustrating. Yes, you will get stuck. It's how you deal with these problems that will dictate your success with this project.
4. Submit the finished product to the Assignment 5 folder.
The more that you challenge yourself, the more that you will get out of this assignment. I'm looking forward to seeing the final products!!
Nov 21
As mentioned previously, we will look at a few tutorials that focus on using the Action Essentials pack. Though it is not perfect, the following video does stress the importance of modifying your clip once it is in After Effects.
Video: How to Use Action Essentials in After Effects
Nov 18
Note: The Parallax Photography Project (Assignment 4) has two parts. You need to submit a 'practice' version and an 'Orientation Video' version. You can use any picture that you want for the 'practice' version. Orientation Video photos can be found on my machine. Make sure that you check with me before you grab them.
Assignment 5 - Action Scene
For the next assignment, I would like to see everyone use Action Essentials. Here's what you need to do:
1. Peruse the Action Essentials folder on the server (in the Video Copilot folder).
2. With a group, come up with an idea for an action scene that incorporates at least 8 different Action Essentials effects. The scene should be approximately one minute in length.
3. Shoot your movie.
4. Each group member must edit their own version.
5. Submit the final copy to the Assignment 5 folder on the server.
We will go over the basics of using the Action Essentials discs. However, you will also want to check out some tutorials.
Oct. 28
Looking for info on Parallax Photography? Here are two videos that we have been using in class:
How to Animate a Photo
How to Animate a Photo (Comment Response)
Try to grab a photo from home that you might want to practice with. Remember, you will have to complete one practice image and one "good copy".
Oct. 15
Here is the Assignment #3 document.
We'll finish working with the tutorial today. There will be some green (blue) screen time after that.
Oct. 7
Today is your last day to work on Assignment #2. Don't forget to match the edits to the beats of the music!
Our next project will revolve around using the green (or blue) screen. To do so, we're going to take part in a group movie that should be pretty scary. I'll explain in class.
Sept. 30
Have you added text to that masterpiece?
It may not be a masterpiece without some text.
Sept. 26
I will show you a more advanced technique that you can use (if you're up for the challenge).
Other than that, you will need to gather footage today. You will not be able to film on Monday.
Sept. 25
Now that we've spent some time looking at 'animations', let's look at your next assignment (Assignment #2).
Once again, you will need to head out and gather footage. Remember, you have the chance to make this an even more meaningful experience than it is. Think outside the box.
Sept. 19
Time to move on!
Today we will talk about animations in After Effects (aka: moving our video around).
The basic concept that we will look at today is adding keyframes. We'll talk a little about split screen editing, as it will be the focus of your next assignment. To get an idea of what I'm talking about, check out this video from the Thomas Crown Affair (1968). Don't forget this one.
Let's look at something a little more recent. Here's a scene from Ang Lee's version of the Hulk. Here's a music video that has more layers than you can imagine.
Sept. 17
Today will be the final day to work on Assignment #1. Make sure that you export the final project to the Assignment 1 folder on the server.
Sept. 12
Thanks to Nick M. we have another way of completing this assignment. In case you missed it, you can start editing the video in Premiere Pro, copy it, and then paste it two more times. That way, you can work between After Effects and Premiere Pro, while keeping all of your edits.
Let me know if you need help with this.
Sept. 10
Thanks to some great problem solving yesterday (Samar) we were able to fix all of the bugs with the picture styles. I'll talk briefly about the cinestyle and LUTs before you head out. If you haven't uploaded the picture style onto your camera, you will need to do so before you head out to film.
The LUTs can be found in the Editing & Effects folder on the server. They are in a folder titled "LUTs".
Sept. 9
Although we didn't get to the cinestyle feature, I'd still like you to go ahead and film. We'll talk briefly about the camera equipment. The rest of the class will be devoted to filming and uploading footage.
Sept. 8
We'll continue with our color correction today. Use the list below as a reference to all of the different techniques that we will be using.
Once we have made it through the list we will talk about the Video Production equipment and introduce your next project (Assignment 1).

Check out the inspirational quote for today. It fits perfectly with this course (and what we strive for). Today's Agenda: - Look at the course outline - Introduction to After Effects (we'll use this link about special effects in movies) - The Server: your new best friend - Color Correction with After Effects -Levels / Auto Levels -Shadows / Highlights -Curves (for overall tonality) -Vibrance -LUTs and Cinemastyle - Try color correcting some footage on your own (hint: there's footage on the server!) |
Our first day! We will spend some time looking at the course outline during our 25 minute period ---->
